Abby, My Preemie Rock Star

Me and Abby…my preemie rock star at one pound.

My name is Jessica Woolwine (formerly Bensten) and I live in Yorktown, Virginia with my two “miracles” Jackson (9) and Abby (5), and my bonus baby, Henry (1). I love capturing stories and photos of my kids and our crazy, lovely, hectic life.

I work as the Creative Director for a public relations agency in Virginia Beach and am a graduate of James Madison University‘s School of Media Arts and Design. I enjoy mixing my talents for graphic design and creative writing with community relations. I am a past member of the NICU Family Advisory Council and the Patient/Family Advisory Council for CHKD and contribute as a featured blogger to Around the Blocks. I also volunteer with miscellaneous graphic design projects for the CHKD NICU, Roc Solid Foundation and SMILE. I love these organizations, so check them out!

As a mother to a childhood cancer survivor and a micro-preemie, I’m passionate about supporting other mothers and families dealing with health issues. All parents have it in them to be a healthcare advocate for their kid. I didn’t set out to know any of this stuff! However, because I do, I hope my experience can serve as a resource for others in their own personal journey with their children.

  1. Wow just soaking in some of your amazing story and beautifully written posts. I think I need to keep reading. Real stories, real people inspired words – they get to me every time. Thank you.

  2. I saw the photo you posted of your sweet Abby on Today Parents and followed the interweb-trail here where I’ve been reading for nearly an hour. You are an AMAZING and INSPIRING mother and woman!! And those two beautiful babies… With one on the way!! So exciting. Congratulations, I so look forward to following along <3

    • So sweet of you to comment! The road’s been rocky, but we’re blessed. Thanks for reading – I saw that post about baby smiles on Today and knew I had the perfect picture!

  3. I found your page through your HuffPost article about finding strength from your son. My son is Jaxson. He was a micropreemie, like Abby. He was born at 23w3d and spent 93 days in the NICU. Just before his second birthday, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. We’ve got it all wrapped up in one hilarious, curious, funny, and kind boy. <3 Jax's light shines so bright – he helps lead the way when we're feeling lost and confused. I'm looking forward to following along with your story!

    • Andrea – wow. It doesn’t seem fair that one little guy should have double whammies. Sounds like he’s an awesome little kid! Isn’t it amazing how sometimes our kids are born with the spirit and strength to power through things that would bring adults to their knees? Thanks for reaching out!
